This article examines the role of the ‘Magazyn’ supplement of the Kielce daily Słowo Ludu in popularizing Polish history in the last year of the celebrations of Poland’s Millennium (1966). Like the rest of the Polish press the Magazyn was expected to take part in the ideological offensive against the Catholic Church’s idea of the Millennium. Although the Magazyn did adopt the outlines of the secular narrative sanctioned by the authorities, it also managed to bring in a lot of material dealing with the history of the region. In this way it did a good job of raising the historical awareness of the residents of Kielce and its environsDownloads
