Minor Pomeranian periodicals from 1910–1915

Abstract

The beginning of the 20th century saw the rise of local Polish press in the smaller towns of Prusy Zachodnie (the Prussian province of Westpreußen). The trend was set by Nasza Gazeta, which was launched in Starogard Gdański in 1910. It was soon joined by two more titles, Wieczory Rodzinne (Family Evenings) and Otucha (Encouragement), which were also printed in Starogard Gdański from 1912 and 1913 respectively. April 1911 saw the launch of Głos Ludu (The People’s Voice) in Grudziądz, Głos Polski (Voice of Poland) in Czersk and Kurier Narodowy (The National Courier) in Małe Tarpno near Grudziądz. A special issue of Gazeta Chojnicka was printed on 15 March 1912. In July 1912 the Pomeranian church o rganists could start reading the periodical Organista. December 1912 saw the trial run of another local paper, Gazeta Świecka. The town Lubawa was home to two papers. Głos Lubawski (The Voice of Lubawa) was the only newspaper that managed to keep afl oat throughout the period of World War I.
