Jewish Children’s periodicals in Poland between the two world wars – in three languages

Jewish periodicals for children and youth were published in Poland between the two world wars by a variety of bodies: political parties, youth movements, social welfare institutions, educational networks and individual schools. These periodicals were written in three languages: Polish, Yiddish and Hebrew. The Jewish community in Poland during that period was highly heterogeneous in many ways — politically, socially and in the degree of religious observance. Each periodical refl ects the orientation and values of the body publishing it. This article reviews the Jewish periodicals for young people in each of the three languages, and notes these various orientations and values. The article is the fruit of many years of research in which these periodicals were located in Israel, in Poland and in the United States
