The murder of Paweł Adamowicz in opinion weeklies

Abstract

The article reviews how selected opinion weeklies described the murder of Paweł Adamowicz. Texts from six weeklies (Newsweek, Polityka, Do Rzeczy, Wprost, Gazeta Polska, Sieci) in the period from January 13 to February 4, 2019 were examined. Differences in the way of presenting the tragedy of Gdańsk were found, also within magazines with a similar worldview. They concerned the interpretation of events, the vocabulary used and attempts to illustrate the new reality in which Polish society found itself after the death of the mayor of Gdańsk. The conducted analysis allowed to conclude that the discussed magazines fulfilled their function as commentators of socio-political events.
